Everything You Need to Know About The NFR

Every year, the National Finals Rodeo draws about $90 million to the Las Vegas economy as thousands of fans flock to the Thomas & Mack Center while others watch from hotels in Las Vegas. In 2023, the Wrangler NFR will return to Las Vegas on December 7-16, where the top 120 contestants will compete for a share of the $10.25 million purses and the coveted PRCA Gold Buckle. In addition to the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, fans can enjoy a variety of entertainment options at the Thomas & Mack Center. You have no excuse not to go to Las Vegas in 2022 for the NFR.

National Finals Rodeo 2023

There are seven rodeo activities in the NFR including Bareback Riding, Steer Wrestling, Team Roping (Header & Heeler), Saddle Bronc Riding, Tie-Down Roping, Barrel Racing and Bull Riding. There is also an All-Around Champion event in which cowboys vie for the most coveted prize at the National Finals Rodeo. The PRCA standings are determined by the total prize money earned by cowboys during the NFR year.

The NFR main events are:

Bareback Riding

A rider who participates in Bareback Riding is allowed to hold tightly to a bucking horse (bronco) with bareback rigging. The rider must stay on top of the horse during the riding technique and show the best grip possible. Cowboys are judged on their riding technique and qualify after an 8-second ride.

Saddle Bronc Riding

Here, a cowboy aims to maintain balance for at least 8 seconds while the horse is bucking. While sitting on a saddle, the riders hold on to a thick rein attached to the horse’s halter with one hand. It’s quite similar to Bareback Riding. The only difference is that Saddle Bronc Riding focuses on maintaining balance, while Bareback Riding relies more on holding on while a horse is bucking.

Steer Wrestling

The story revolves around a cowboy and a Corriente steer, hence its name. This form of wrestling is also known as bulldogging. Cowboys need to jump on a steer by its horns and bring it to a halt as quickly as possible after dismounting from their horse. Performance of this event demands precision, speed, technique, and strength, which is why only experienced cowboys should practice it at the NFR. Despite its physical hazards, it remains the most exciting event in the Wrangler NFR.

Team Roping

As the name suggests, it’s a team combination event. The event is known as ‘heading and heeling,’ and it’s the only time men and women riders compete together at a rodeo.

  • Headers: There are only about three attempts for the header to rope a steer’s head. The ropes should be tied around the neck, head, and horns of the animal.
  • Heelers: On the other hand, heelers attempt to rope the animal’s hind legs by approaching it from behind. If both hind legs are not tied together, a 5-second penalty is assessed. If they are faster, they will receive a higher score.
As the animal is between the headers and heelers, the ropes should be taut once the steer is captured, and the headers and heelers must face each other. It’s an exciting competition that requires wit and team effort.

Tie-Down Roping

Calf roping is another term for Tie-Down Roping, one of the oldest timed rodeo events. During the event, participants watch a cowboy on horseback try to restrain an unruly calf by tossing a rope loop attached to the horse to the calf. Although the slight head starts taken by the calf, both the cowboy and the calf leave from the same starting point. Cowboys depend on their horses to reduce rope slack after dismounting, then tie up their calves as quickly as they can.

Barrel Racing

WPRA (Women’s Professional Rodeo Association) organizes the Barrel Racing event more as a women’s event. There are barrels set up as landmarks to guide horseback cowgirls along a course where they race against the clock. Three barrels in a triangular formation are arranged so that the cowgirls can run around them in a cloverleaf pattern as fast as they can. If a barrel is knocked over, the cowgirls take a five-second penalty.

Bull Riding

Full-grown bulls instead of horses now do the work of riding here. While competing, cowboys need to maintain their balance by staying on top of the bull without falling. Their hands are wrapped around a flat braided rope that they wrap around the bull’s chest. Cowboys try to demonstrate their bull riding skills with all the bucking involved in this exciting rodeo event at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo.

All-Around Champion

It is widely known that the All-Around Champion title is the highest honour that the PRCA can confer. A cowboy who has been awarded this title has exhibited exceptional versatility and high talent levels. To qualify for this award, the cowboy must have earned more than anyone else in at least one event during the year (at least $3,000 per event). During the PRCA year, the All-Around Champion can be either one person or two people with the most money won.

Other Special Events

At the NFR 2023, there will be events for every family member. This is why you should purchase your tickets as soon as possible and plan on being at the Thomas & Mack Center between December 7-16.

Here are some special events at the Wrangler NFR.

  • Cowboy Christmas

It is a marketplace for hundreds of vendors in the United States and Canada to sell their products focused around cowboy shopping. Featuring more than 225 vendors on 250,000+ square feet of ground, Cowboy Christmas is a fan favorite. It means that there will always be a gift or item for everyone who wishes to attend this event. This festival has been held annually since 1986, and it is free to attend.

  • Cowboy Gift Show

One of the best ways to showcase various unique and one-of-a-kind items is at the Cowboy gift show. Vendors from around the world attend this event, and there are many great items on display. The event will be filled with many reasons you should attend, including purchasing a special gift for your significant other.

  • Junior World Finals

The Junior World Finals include events similar to those of the National Finals Rodeo, but with younger competitors. This event showcases young cowboys and cowgirls who are top rodeo competitors in the United States and across the globe. The NFR runs simultaneously with this event, and there will be plenty of excitement here.

Contestants

The top 120 contestants from all over the United States compete in different rodeo events, and their PRCA standings are based on how much they have earned in each segment. They compete for the coveted PRCA Gold Buckle title and a share of $10.25 million in prize money during the 10-day event on December 7-16. You can see the NFR 2023 contestant list as soon as it becomes available.

Super Bowl of The Rodeo

Each year, the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) hosts the National Finals Rodeo. There have been seven major rodeo events in the NFR since 1958, determining the world champion. The events are Bareback Riding, Saddle Bronc Riding, Bull Riding, Tie-Down Roping, Barrel Racing, Steer Wrestling, and Team Roping.

So, why is it called the Super Bowl of Rodeo? The term is attributed to its popularity and economic power within rodeo. Each year over 200k fans attend the NFR event at the Thomas & Mack Center and hotels in Las Vegas, contributing about $90 million to the local economy.

Miss Rodeo America

It is one of the very long-standing traditions and experiences that the NFR offers to young women, creating a legacy for generations to come.

A state rodeo queen finalist from the USA competes in the Miss Rodeo America competition for a chance to win $20,000 and other notable prizes. The winner will attend rodeos throughout the country as part of the rodeo promotion process.

In this way, Miss Rodeo America promotes women’s opportunities to the outside world. It’s an excellent opportunity to form lifelong friendships and open doors for all the competitors and for the young lady chosen to wear the crown.

2023 Pageant Dates

There has not yet been a confirmation for this year’s Miss Rodeo America pageant official dates, but it remains at the South Point Hotel. Still, you can find every detail about Miss Rodeo America 2023 here.

Junior World Finals presented by @YETI

It was founded in 2015 as Junior World Finals. More than 850 contestants will compete in the Wrangler Rodeo Arena during NFR 2023 at the Las Vegas Convention Center. In their quest for a coveted Montana Silversmiths championship buckle, these young athletes will compete for more than $1 million in cash and prizes.

There will be one performance a day for every contestant. Two champions are crowned in each event at the end of every round. Winners are determined by the best cumulative score/time, and season earnings determine the overall champion.

ProRodeo Hall of Fame Events

ProRodeo Hall of Fame was established to educate the public about the history of rodeo and the impact it might have on western American culture. It is also where rodeo legends, whether past or present, are recognized with notable awards. By doing so, it inspires the next generation.

The 2023 NFR won’t be exceptional, and that’s why we expect at least two annual events that make up the ProRodeo Hall of Fame Events.

Here are the two events.

15th Annual Wrangler Gold Buckle Gala

Last year, Clint Johnson was recognized as the 2023 Legend of ProRodeo. But it’s yet to be known who will be recognized as the Legend of Rodeo in 2023. There will be entertainment, dinner, and a silent and live auction during the event.

  • Date: TBD
  • Location: South Point Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.
  • Entry: A $100 ticket for each person/ $900 ticket for every ten people.

35th Annual ProRodeo Hall of Fame Golf Tournament

You must have a reservation to enter the golf tournament, but it’s open for all. The event is expected to take place in December 2023.

  • Date: TBD
  • Location: The Bali Hai Golf Club in Las Vegas, Nevada
  • Entry: $275 per amateur, $300 per professional, and $1,000 a team.

Visit prorodeohalloffame.com for more information about the ProRodeo Hall of Fame events.

Gold Card Room at Thomas & Mack

Gold Card Room is where the biggest supporters of ProRodeo gather as they watch the National Finals Rodeo on large screen TVs. It’s open to PRHOF lifetime members and current PRCA Gold Card members. The Gold Room can be accessed every night during the 10-days of NFR 2023, with doors opening at 4:15 p.m. Those in attendance are treated to a dinner that starts at 4:30 p.m.

Conventions and Tradeshows

2023 National Finals Rodeo will feature the ProRodeo Hall of Fame in various locations in Las Vegas. Here you get to learn all about exciting things happening in the hall. You can create a positive, memorable experience by attending Conventions and Tradeshows during NFR 2023.

Standings

The 2023 PRCA season has just started, and we expect a very competitive year from all the 120 top contestants in the world as they battle it out until the final days on December 7-16.

The current all-around standings place Bart Brunson on top for now, but anything can happen during the year, and he might be dethroned as number one. To check the current standings visit NFR Standings page.

NFR sets the amount at stake at $10.257 million at the start of the year. We expect the prize pay-outs to be more by the time the finals take place on December 7-16, 2023. The rodeo event will feature about 120 top contestants for the 10-day competition, where we will get the ultimate winner of the PRCA Gold Buckle. Every cowboy or cowgirl who participates receives a pay-out of $10,000. Be sure to note that the overall world champions and average winners earn the most.
