Who will qualify for NFR Breakaway Roping?

During the two-day, 10-round event, produced by Group W Productions with the help of the PRCA, the top 15 breakaway ropers will compete for a prize purse of $200,000.

NFR Breakaway Roping History

Starting in 2019, the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association (WPRA) sanctioned breakaway roping will be an official rodeo event at some Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) events, making it the only rodeo event for women along with barrel racing.

The WPRA world champion in breakaway roping is determined at the year-end National Finals Breakaway Roping (NFBR). The crowning started in 2020, and we expect to see another one in 2022 moving forward.

The National Final Rodeo (NFR), also sanctioned by the PRCA, will be held in conjunction with this event.

With the 2020 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, a women’s event was included for the first time under the rodeo’s umbrella. It was only in 2019 that breakaway roping joined barrel racing in the Wrangler NFR at the season’s end for the first time. Breakaway roping has traditionally been part of the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association.

NFR Breakaway Roping 2022

The 2022 National Finals Breakaway Roping will be held at Orleans Arena, Las Vegas.

There will be five rounds per day for this rapid-fire event on Monday, December 5, and Tuesday, December 6, beginning at 1 p.m. (PST).

A world champion buckle by Montana Silversmiths and a world champion saddle by Cactus Saddlery will also be awarded in addition to the prize money. Montana Silversmith’s go-round buckles will also be awarded after each round.

The 2021 Wrangler National Finals Breakaway Roping World Title was won by Sawyer Gilbert, a 19-year-old from South Dakota, for the first time. During the second and final day of the Wrangler NFBR, she came from behind to win her first world championship. Her ranking in the world rankings was second going into the Finals.

For several years, breakaway roping has been a joint effort between the PRCA and WPRA. The 2022 Wrangler NFR Breakaway Roping World Championship will establish breakaway roping as a fan favorite and ensure its continued growth in professional rodeo.

Live streaming will be available on the Wrangler Network for free of charge during both performances of the 2022 Wrangler National Finals Breakaway Roping.

What is Breakaway Roping

The breakaway roping event is similar to calf roping, except the calf is not tied or thrown. A calf and a mounted rider participate in this rodeo event. One by one, a calf is moved into a chute with spring-loaded doors.

The rider needs to rope the calf successfully, which will be given a head start on its neck as quickly as possible. When the rider has achieved this, he stops the horse and pulls the rope tight, breaking the string.

A rider who ropes a calf in the shortest time wins the breakaway roping event.

Breakaway roping is a popular event at semi-professional rodeos, including college, junior, and high school rodeos. Only women compete at the college level, but all other levels have men and women.

How to start Breakaway Roping

The skills required to rope take time to learn. However, once you are dedicated to your craft and have put in the hours, you will be catching steers left and right in no time.

Here are five steps to get you started.

Purchase a calf roping dummy head

To get an idea of the size and shape of your roping target, attach the dummy head to a bale of hay. Usually, the dummy heads are made of plastic, but some even come with horns.

Choose the right rope

Next, get a good practice rope and a comfortable glove to work with. Keep in mind that heelers tend to use stiffer ropes, while headers tend to use softer ropes. It is better to use a softer rope when practicing roping skills.

Create a scenario with high pressure

Practice catching the fake steer two to four times with the rope. Due to the high-octane nature of calf roping, you need to challenge yourself with a series of drills. You’re ready for the next step if you can maintain your roping skills under pressure.

Engage your horse

You must ensure that your horse is comfortable with a rope around its body and head if you want to increase your speed. Next, ride your horse to the dummy and rope it. If you succeed, stop. To hone your breakaway roping skills, keep practicing with your horse.

Make use of a mechanical steer

You will be able to practice with more realism using a mechanical steer. You can practice straight-line driving first, then zig-zag driving. Once you’re confident enough, you can tackle the real thing.

Conclusion

As you await the final on December 5-6 at Orleans Arena in Las Vegas, here is the best information you can find about NFR Breakaway Roping 2022. You can also learn how to breakaway roping is done with the steps above.
